lots of good ideas, presented rationally, and with evidence
Like other of his books, the author presents a coherent set of recommendations that appear to have good evidence behind them. From my reading of other sources, he is consistent with best evidence and cautious in his approach to supplements, identifying the benefits as well as potential liabilities. A book well worth reading and taking into consideration when one begins to plan, a lifestyle and supplements.

Quit Wasting $$$ on Worthless Supplements
My favorite sentence in this book is, “If you don’t eat, exercise, and sleep right, the health effects of adding any supplement may be minimal to non-existent.” That sets an honest tone. Also in favor of integrity is that the author doesn’t offer Mangan-branded supplements for sale.I like this book. I learned a lot from it. I’ve benefited by reading the author’s tweets and blog (Rogue Health and Fitness) for several years. He’s smart and, I believe, honest. The author supports his assertions with numerous scientific references, organized by chapter at the back of the book. If he cites a study done in mice, he tells you. Human studies admittedly carry more weight.Have you wondered if protein supplements and creatine are good for muscle strength and energy? Does magnesium increase testosterone levels? Does berberine have beneficial health effects? The answers are here. The author gives good advice regarding calcium supplements that even most physicians don’t know about.Great recommendations on food.No book is perfect, and this one is no different. It has no index. So if you’re curious about turmeric or supplements that control diabetes, you have to scan the whole book. My copy didn’t include references for chapter 11. Page numbers for chapters in the index didn’t match the actual chapter starts. My least favorite sentence in the book was something about Dr. Joseph Mercola being a trustworthy source of health information; he is not (search “mercola” at ScienceBasedMedicine.org).Again, I like this book, learned much from it, and recommend it. If you’re taking lots of supplements now, read this book to find out if they help, harm, or are only good for making expensive urine.

Up to date based on current research.
The recommendations are useful an accurate.Example: he mentions the value of taking magnesium supplements., but also points out that if you should get a blood test since if you are not low in magnesium then taking a supplement will not do you any good.

Great health information, follow the author on Twitter @Mangan150
This is the first book I have read by PD Mangan and it won’t be the last. I have read articles on his website and I follow him on Twitter. This book is a great resource to look at when considering what supplements you might want to use and those you should avoid. I have not implemented all of Mangan’s advice but I follow a lot of it and I am close to 60 years old. I’m in better shape than most men in their 20’s and 30’s thanks to him and others such as Jason Fung and Benjamin Bikman, as well as many people whose strength training advice has been helpful.

    Very Good BASIC supplement Information
If you have a limited knowledge of supplements then this book is a must have. If you do have a lot of knowledge about supplements,, thought the information is good, it would be repetitive and not worth the money.

Well-written, well-sourced. Acting on some of the suggestions …
Well-written, well-sourced.Acting on some of the suggestions in your other works over 18mths:* diet modifications away from seed oils, refined carb, starches* berberine/curcumin/cod-liver-oil supplementation, whey/casein shakes on workout days* intermittent fasting* blood donation (every 8 weeks until optimized range, then annually)Prior to reading – Ferritin @ 250, ~18mths later, Ferritin @ 39 (through blood donation 5x).A1c dropped 3/10’s of a point (5.6 to 5.3)Waist size dropped 3″Weight dropped 10lbs.Bench press hit all-time-highs (for me, 225×3).Blood pressure dropped 120/85 -> 110/60 (they take it every time I donate blood, so I have a plot over time – dropping refined carb did the trick).Vitamin D increased from 29 (borderline low) to 50 (optimal).

No Nonsense Approach To Supplements For Men
This is the second book I’ve read of Mangan’s (Dumping Iron was the first) and I enjoyed it just as much. Mangan has a knack for writing detailed information but in a way where he cuts to the core of what’s really important to know; this results in a book that’s not only jam packed with info but is also an easy read that you find yourself absorbing at a steady clip. I loved how Best Supplements For Men not only details what you SHOULD be taking as a guy but also the baloney to avoid and also how Mangan keeps a focus on what the most economical way is to go about taking the various items he recommends. If you want a no-nonsense approach to what exactly are the important supplementation options for anti-aging and optimal wellness, then I can’t recommend this book any higher.

    Very good source of information!
I found this book very educative and contains a lot of good advices. Supplements can support our health and quality of life, but only in combination with an exercise and the proper diet and calorie restriction!

I first read the Iron overload book, I had to also read this one as I was impressed with the first one. Impressive read…

I recently came across P.D Mangan via twitter. I had no idea he wrote books. I recently picked this one up and I’m really amazed. Every young emerging adult should pick this up, every dad should read this, any person who’s interested in optimizing their health should have this. It’s packed with great information. Thank you P.D

This is a fantastic reference and not just for men. P. D. Mangan sets the gold standard bar for health and fitness. This book will change your life…it did mine.

  13. Pete Kell

Well written and easy to read and understand. Definitely a help for optimal supplementation, what they do, do they work, why they work, ect. Diet and resistance training being the staple, then a few supplements to fine tune. Well worth the read.
