Solves a specific problem you may or may not have. Shaky science.
My husband had been getting mild heartburn every day, so I got this for him. After 10 days of treatment, he’s still getting mild heartburn every day. Frankly, I’m not surprised. My understanding of heartburn is that it’s not primarily bacteria-triggered. It’s a simple mechanical failure where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to close. I did some research and learned that in something like 40% of sufferers, the H. pylori bacteria are indeed present, but to my best knowledge, a causal connection hasn’t been proven. To quote people much smarter than I am, “The relationship between H. pylori infection and GERD is controversial.”¹ (GERD being “Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease”).If my understanding is correct, and you don’t happen to be among the unlucky 40%, then taking this is basically barking up the wrong tree. It probably does a great job wiping out your personal H. pylori colony, but you won’t have any acid reflux relief to show for it. Well, you probably won’t be getting stomach ulcers now (the main problem with having a bunch of H. pylori kicking around, and arguably a bigger problem than a few lousy episodes of acid reflux), so…yay? Why aren’t these being marketed for that?In fact, if I’m reading these scientific papers correctly, H. pylori may be PROTECTING you from acid reflux, among MANY other diseases. Again, to quote people smarter than I am, “the *beneficial* [emphasis mine] association of H. pylori infection with some extragastric diseases should be explored by future research” ² Yes, the same stuff can be good and bad for you at the same time, just like red wine, coffee and chocolate. If so, maybe we shouldn’t be wiping them out? Just, you know, let nature take its course? In conclusion, I’m glad I’m not a bacteriologist. And I’m not sure this product is an unquestionably solid use of your hard-earned money, as opposed to, say, a cat. That would definitely give you heartburn, and I say that as a cat lover 🐱¹ Katz, Philip O MD1; Gerson, Lauren B MD, MSc2; Vela, Marcelo F MD, MSCR3.
